Independent learning

Independent learning is becoming more and more important in today's learning research and has minimized the role of a teacher/mentor. Learners now hold the responsibility of enhancing their knowledge by helping each other.

In this activity, you are asked to read chapter 1 of the book (click the link. Also available in the lab) http://www.docstoc.com/docs/58263796/Fostering-independent-learning and explore the pros and cons of Independent learning. You are required to give your views on this chapter in approximately 300-400 words.

In writing your views, you should consider the following.
  1. How best you learn
  2. Put independent learning into perspective
  3. pose one or two problems regarding independent learning from your context
  4. Suggest solutions to the problems.

This video link can add even more. ( If you are unable to download/watch it, it's also available in the lab)

  1. Independent learning can be taken as learning, not depending on the opinions and ideas of other people, in other words, learning that is ‘self-governed’.

  2. Independent Learning
To get the knowledge of something is called learning. The process of learning is a continuous process which remains till the end of man’s life. We learn from different things. For example we learn from our teachers, friends, internet, and from our environment.
There are different styles of learning which can be adopted by different people.
Some people like to work in groups some like individually.
When we learn individually and relay on our self that is called Independent learning.
Independent learning is more powerful than doing it with others but we can’t ignore the importance of other resources as well. There are some advantages of Independent learning which are as follows
    1) The independent learning is lifelong learning because whatever we learn , can be useful for our whole life. The reason is that the work which we have done by our own efforts can stay long in our minds.
    2) The independent learning makes the man creative thinker because when we face any sort of problem. Then we think on that problem for its solution so this can increase our cognitive capabilities and also this is useful for our practical life, because in that life we have to face lot of problems.
    3) Through the independent learning we can set our goals there are some targets which we have to achieve. By doing this we are able to know that what capabilities we have and by using these which target we can achieve.
    4) Comparing with past we can improve our current learning. Through this we come to know that we must learn from our mistakes and shouldn’t repeat them.
As there are many advantages of independent learning, there are drawbacks too.
As compared to independent learning a source and a guide is better like teacher.
Through dependent learning our orientation will become fixed. We come to know that in what direction we are going and we are well checked by the monitoring of teacher. In other words we get guidance well. That’s why we can resume our strengths on right way as suggested. Therefore the importance of teacher can not be neglected.
So the question arises which style we have to adopt?
In the reply of this question we can say that we have to take guidance from the teachers as well as we have to emphasize more on our self. Because through the combination of both these we can learn effective and our learning can stay long.

    1)A method
    2)A process
    3)A philosophy of education...

  4. Independent Learning
This student is a life long learner, who seizes opportunities that will make him self-reliant. A self-motivated individual who values the learning experience as a way of improving his social worth is a great independent learner. By definition an independent learner is one, who in conjunction with relevant others, can make the decisions necessary to meet his own learning needs. This learner has the ability to obtain the knowledge necessary
in making responsible decisions and taking the proper action to become a positive self-reliant learner.

Independent learnes use all of the resourses available in the school and the community to their fullest potential. There is no absolute standard in independent learning, as each individual has different goals, intrests, needs and life experiences. There is not absolute in the independent learning process as it involves the teacher and the learner to be in an interactive process which will stimulate the intelluctual development of the individual learner.

Rationale for the independent learner is to utilize a variety of processes to obtain their goals. This learner will need motivation, curosity, and a positive self-concept, as well as a sensible school environment that is responsive to his needs and is flexible yet democratic. The teacher's role in this type of learning is to continue increasing the students responsiblity of making decisions, as to gradually transfer control to him, by making available the tools to accomplish this end. This student needs to be inquisitive, be able to co-operate when working in groups and be able to understand resource-based teaching strategies.

In the more independent brain, independent learning is an invaluable way of continuing ones education throughout life, and with the teacher/mentor, it is a good way to continue the life long learning experiences we need to obtain all of our goals and

  5. “…the ability to take charge of one’s learning” H. Holec, 1981
Independent learning means that learners make decisions about their learning
rather than relying on their teachers but also
Independent learning is not only about ‘isolated’ learning, or
operating without the help of teachers, its about sharing ideas and
problems and working together to resolve those problems.talking together and explaining our ideas to each other clarify issues and understand concepts more efficiently..
it can be possible in groups as well as individually..sometimes we can learn better in a group but sometime we need to study alone but it depends upon the topic we are given...
    few skills are required to be an independent learner;
    one should set his goal;
    work out on that goals using specific skills related to that goals;
    manage time according to deadline;
    review your work as an observer;
in this way while completing your task you are learning independently......

  6. Different people have different ways of learning. Some people learn in the guidance of teacher and together with their class fellows and others want to learn autonomously. We can define autonomously as self-regulated learning including pupils having an understanding of their learning. It is also called independent learning.
In independent learning students do not depend on teachers but it does not mean that student works alone. In fact teachers play an important role in enabling and supporting independent learning in different ways like providing learners with resource materials.
When students learn from learning resource materials, whether in libraries or at home, most of their learning is done independently, at their own pace, and in their own way.
There is no absolute standard in independent learning, as each individual has different goals, benefit, needs and life experiences.
An independent learner is self reliant and aware of his strengths and weaknesses. He can plan his learning and set a goal as compared to a dependent learner.

  7. Independent learning
The process or experience of gaining knowledge or skill is called learning.
Seeking knowledge by our own self and relay our own resource is called independent learning.
Independent learning is often related with approaches to learn such as personalization student center learning.
Independent learning can be a goal or a process which allows the learner to manage different learning style and learner can use his own judgment about how best to learn.
He can also learn self direction which leads and motivates him towards higher order thinking.
Learner set their own learning goals. They make choices and direction by them self, because they work individually which make them creative and deep thinker
When the learner increases his capabilities, his maturity and confidence increases with the passage of time. When he sit to solve problems he bears lot of hurdles and he goes through them which makes his mind a strongly decision making.
Independent learning makes our mind like a researcher. When we reach to a prior stage like in PHD then we face fewer hurdles. So we must have some sort of independent thinking.
Some draw could also effect the learner badly. One of them is our education system. This might not be designed in the favour of independent learning. Because we are living in such environment which is not self directed and it lead the learner to do just what they are supposed to do. One of the leading point is that teacher should provide a niece piece of guidance rather than providing too much direction. The objective of teacher’s review is to identify relevant research.
So Dependent and independent learning both are equally important but the best approach is that we should not to much bow before dependency and shouldn’t be a much independent.
Finally we should keep both these style of learning in the sea of knowledge.

    Independent learning
independent learning is a process that a learner acquires knowledge by his own efforts.
There are two types of learner, one they depend others and others those who do not depend others. So, that dependent learner
who has little opportunity to develop independent learning skills, and on the other hand independent learners who are
self directed, self motivated and capable of learning without a teacher. We can not neglect teachers but we mostly depend on us.
Teacher give us a guide line. The role of teacher is equally important but the ideal approach is that we should take guide lines from the teacher and not totally depends on them.We should be cognitive to meet the challanges.

  9. independent study is a process,a method and a philosophy of education where a learner develop ability by his or her.
Even I think, students depends on our ability and show progress, ability and personality in every walk of life.
Many students depends on independent learning and some depends upon dependent learning. who is studing independanly he will get success on every stage of life. In independant study, Student can also face problems because in dependent study teacher, friends helps when the student facing problem. But in independent study, student solve problem himself.
We can get edusation from different sources like online cources on internet.independen study is a way to get education without having to sit in a class room.
the question arises in our mind from read above sentance.how the student can get education by independent learning ?
the anwser is that of this question that indepentden student depends on his ability and due to this ability he get education from independent study.
student use a text book assinment, he saw a picture and notes of class lecture.he use internet, due to internet contact with university and students of diffrent universities.he communicate with the students and improve himself.
    Similarly he get education.

  10. How best you learn??

"I have finished the first question, Sir. Can you check it?"
"Tell me what I have to memorize for the test."
That are some basic faults of a pupil who is very dependent upon his teacher.
Independent learning tells us that how to do work with your own efforts...
When you will be highly independent than you will be able to get the best learnings that you had ever learned.
Good learners will move gradually along the continuum with the help of peers, parents, teachers and appropriate learning experiences.
In the professional area you have a lot of tasks, in which you have to proof yourself as a good and motivated person. So, by depending upon others you can not get the best results in your professional field..

  11. Independent Learning:-
Independent learning referred to as self-directed learning ie self dependent, involves the requirements which are solved through independent to the actual sources.
This type of learning can be improved by developing professional questioning techniques. It means this learning will be helpfull to learn more effectively than other learning techniques.
This type of learning requires more research base and learning than other techniques..

  12. There are different methods of learning. One is independent learning.
In my view independent learning is method or way of learning whereby a learner acquires knowledge by his own efforts. It is also termed as self learning.
Independent learning is usually developed throughout a learner’s time at school
or college to give learners more responsibility for work or learning.
Independent learner is a lifelong learner, who takes opportunities that will make him self-reliant and are intrinsically motivated to make progress in their learning.
Some people assume that independent learning means that a student needs work alone instead it develops independent learning skills in students. It can also develop in class room. An independent learner also takes helps from teachers.
It helps learners to take responsibility for deciding what they need to do in order to learn. If I talk about my learning I am a independent learner as I take help from my teachers as well as discuss with my friends but I also put my efforts in learning.

  13. Indepedent learning.
independent learning is self-direct learning and inprove the contnuing growth of student cabilities.
different people have different kinds of method of learning. some learner belive that the groups learning is better then independent learning and improves our life in a better way.
1 independent learning improve self-cofident in student.
in my opinion independent learning improves and built our skills.

  14. Independent learning is to do efforts by yourself, setting your own goals and deadlines
,organising yourselves and your work and evaluating your use of time.
Encourage learners to think about what learning
strategies work for them and what progress they are
    making.
The different abilities that can be developed in order to improve a learner's
    capacity to learn.
I think the best way of learning is that we should do efforts by studying books,
concerning with teachers and our fellows. In this way we can improve our study,
learning skills and we can easily resolve our problems and difficulties that
    are encountering in our studies.
Indepentend learning students often face problms like lack of confidence. If we donot discuss our problems
with our teachers and our fellow friends then we are not able to perform our tasks well.
Human beings are capable of learning many things.Nourish your brain properly.
learnig can be improved by many ways like:
1.By developing a learning atmosphere and exercises that
    encourage learners to ask questions
By using problems and solving techniques rather than finding right and wrong
    answers to closed questions.
3.Learners tend to become more confident when they
know that their views will be taken seriously, so provide
opportunities for learners to express their needs and
    concerns.

  15. Man is the product of skills, experience and observations. Skills are innate attributes of an individual which are quite genetic in nature. Experience is something which grows up by age. Observations are behaviourial qualities of an individual...which frame the basis of independant learning.
    Independant Learning:
It is a technique to gain maximum out of environmental variables. These variables can be biotic or a-biotic. Biotic variables are the living beings which directly or indirectly effect one's learning whereas a-biotic ones are the environmental supplements.
    @ Point 1 & 2:
Depending upon the personal criteria, if a man comes to know himself, he has approached the greatest milestone of his life. Learning what you really are forms the base of self-recognition. This is something which requires ultra judgement of self-being while considering both (positive & negative) prospects of life which can be independantly learnt. That is how you can learn well.
    @ Point 3 & 4:
Independant learning requires crititcal observation of self-being. This results in destruction of group working. In case of self impeachment one might left one's best pieces of ideas and positive points.By that criticism one's morale could be effected badly and decision making power can be damaged. In case of dependent learning we are monitered or checked by someone whereas independendent learning has no such aspect.
Finally, dependent and indepedent styles of learning have equal respect. It is up to us that either we bow before dependent or independent learning styles or carry both of them.

  16. people learn in different ways. Some export say that seven methods of learning. everey body has ability but not skill skills are improved by time by time. skills are the part of learning. independent learning is the effort and strategy of yourself. independent learning relates to interpersonal learning. for example first we learn or see the other people and pick the learning style of the people and adopt this learning style in our own life to improve our independent learning. three types of independent learning given below.
    Listening learners
    Seeing learners
    Touch / experience learners
Listening learners heard their mother, believed the information, and never touched a stove (stove mean burn)
Seeing learners watched their brother touch the stove, and never touched it.
Experience learners touched the stove; but only once!
Here are some everyday problems you might want to learn about. How would you learn more? Think about them - no way of learning is better than the others. Remember, the way you learn is perfect for you.
independent learning is better when we quide the famous presnality.
some problems in independent learning is that by not guide the well educated people.

  17. From the above discussion I've observed that Independent Learning = learning in isolation... I dont want to add-up with the things like setting of goals, self-confidence etc. Yup they exist but what I believe that "When your mind stops thinking, you become a dependent learner". And somehow all independent learners are dependent because nobody has absolute knowledge about everything. You have to become dependent of your teacher because you can't learn everything all your own but according to me if you think and try to find solutions on your own and if you think different and beyond the scope of the lecture then you are an independent learner...

  18. Independent Learning
Learning is a contineous process in human's life.It Starts from first day of his life till end.A man learns from environments from his concernd peoples from different situations from problems which comes in his life.
There are two types of Learning. Independent and grouped learning.
In group there is interaction between fellows teachers and other related peoples.
Independent Learning is self directed learning. In which a learner totally depends on himself, he use his own resources to learn.

    How best you learn?
In this stage I need both independent and group learning because I am studying technical education. And in Technical Education nobody can work without sources. He can't manage all required tools. So for technical education with less resources group learning is better then independent learning. And as a whole I will prefer Independent Learning. Because independent learning requires more hardwork then dependent learning so it makes man hardworking. Which is essential for learner.

    Problems regarding Independent Learning
Main problem regarding Independent learning is shortage of resources everyone can't manage resorces due to of financial problems and many others, There are some other drawbacks also for a independent learner for example "Time Managment". Time managment is a factor,if a learner can't manage his time and fail to learn something in time he will waste his time.

    Suggestions:
Basically Independent Learning needs following things.
    Motivation
    Time Management
    Context Management
    Physicall Functioning

If a Learner fulfill all these requirments he can become a good learner, Because with these things he can utilize his time and efferts properly.

The students learn best when they are autonomous learners who according to Wedemeyes have the following qualities:
1.They like to plan ahead longer and stick to aplan modifying it as they go along it without abondaning it and improving it.
2.They make the best possible use of time and realize that they will have to give up other things that took time for their study or learning.
3.They enjoy reading ,writing, listening and discussing.
4.They enjoy questioning ,testing and analyzing.
5.They work cooperatively with others ,but enjoy being "on their own" in learning.
6.They are not afraid of being different.
    @point 2=INDEPENDENT LEARNING
Independent learning is the process of learning which a student adopts when he is separated from his teacher, while making himself autonomous, dependable on himself only and his fellows and finds other resources rather than communicating with the teacher (it may include working with fellow students or colleagues or any other source of learning).
The student might place himself in a non-individualized program
or plan to acquirce the things which he wants to learn. The self motivation and self-directed study or observation in a particular subject or matter must always be present when learning independently.
This type of learning which allows a student to work cooperatively with his colleagues, his planning and acting according to the plans, his efficient use of time and his quest for finding the answers of the questions arising in his mind do a positive effect in his study is termed as independent learning and generally makes a student more curious and well learnt than through the traditional system which involves a great help and guidance by the teachers.
    @point3= PROBLEMS:
Problem no1..A student might get confused while learning something which has been described in some other way while as retrieved from another source which might be contradictory to the one he has been learnt before and bring the student to a dead end where he can't decide what's right and what's wrong, while being not in contact with his teacher and he fails.
Problem no2..A student's thought for the application of a certain skill or knowledge that he has learnt might not be that diverse as a teachers and he might fail when tested by a teacher.
    @point 4:
Problem no 1. The only solution in my perspective is that "CREAT A MUCH BIGGER PROBLEM SO THAT THIS PROBLEM SHOULD LOOK MINOR IN COMPARISON".
Problem no 2.Don't allow the TEACHER to test YOU

  24. Independent learning is a partition or style of seeking knowledge. It is accually the trust of doing something by our own efforts and abilities. If we want to learn then we must have confidence and belief on ourselves that "I can do it".If I don't have any interest in learing then there is no one in the world who will teach me or make me to understand anything, but if I have interest and relay on myself then it doesn't matter always that I must have guidence or supervision to move forward in the field of learning.I can take help from teacher or from elders where necessary because no one in this world among all the living beings is perfect. But it is more accurate, respectable and best policy to have something of your own and gain something by your own keenness and capability. So at the end I am finished with this that if we have trust on ourselves each to do somehting and also capable to do that then we can toppeled the entire world, but if we cann't relay on ourselves then no help in the world can take us up stairs.God has already told us in His famous and Holy book "Qur'an" that if a man don't want to change his condition and also putting no efforts to do so then God will never change it.Now we wanna' seek anything then nothing is best than a belief to get that by our own skills and abilities.

  25. Believing that reading is over-taught and under-practiced, the authors remind readers of the benefits of providing time for students to engage in sustained silent reading. They further contend that alternating between months of traditional and sustained silent reading may be one alternative to the strict structure-bound model. Further recommendations include:
giving students time to read books of their own choice
    b) allowing students to enjoy good books and stories at many different levels
    c) observing, commenting on and enjoying student strategies as students reread sections or tell others what they are reading
    d) allowing students time to find their own levels and discard books they become disinterested in while encouraging them to find other books; e) having students keep a simple record of reading f) stating broad reading goals openly.

Though SSR requires a firm commitment of student time, the authors remind readers that it conveys to students the extreme value the teacher places on reading as an individual pursuit and conveys a respect for student interests and resources far beyond words and lectures.

  26. Definition:
“Independent learning means giving students opportunities to take control of their leaning and guided rather than lead”.
Independent learning has helped in developing intrinsic motivation and self assessment. This mode of learning helps a great deal in learning in academic as well as non-academic areas throughout one’s life. For beneficial results of independent leaning a person have to self regulate him and self regulation comprises of three phases stated as:
    1) Preparation
    2) Performance
    3) Appraisal
The very first phase is preparation phase in which one has to define his goals, strategy and outcome expectations. Then, it is performance where one has to use strategy and it results in self monitoring and self experimentation. And the last phase is appraisal phase in which one judge his performance or you can say it leads to self reflection.
Now, coming to the point how best a person can learn through independent learning? Actually an independent learner is self motivated and appears to be an enthusiastic scholar. One can keep on updating his knowledge throughout his life. An independent learner work through different strategies as he learns, think about how well the strategies are going and keep in modifying them accordingly to success, which in short make him creative thinker.
Since there are several benefits of independent learning but there are few draw backs as well which are listed as
    1) It is hard for students to get used to independent learning requiring some proper guideline.
    2) In independent learning, there are so many elements which a learner has to tackle by himself and can potentially contribute to difficulty.
    Solution:
An independent learner should always keep himself in touch with some tutor or some elder who can lead him through.
And as far as multiple tasking is concerned, a learner should manage his time effectively.

  27. INDEPENDENT LEARNING STRATEGIES facilitate parts of a differentiated curriculum.. Emphasis is placed on student negotiation and modification of tasks, and on students pursuing these tasks with greater independence.

    This can be achieved by

preparing in advance options for the students to select as part of a unit's work (with options set at variable levels, involving different skills and appealing to different learning styles),
encouraging students to choose the option they felt was most relevant - with this involving teacher input to facilitate student awareness of the match between the options and the student's talents and needs,
encouraging students to suggest and pursue variations to the suggested options if they can present them as viable options to the teacher,
encouraging students to work in groups if appropriate to the task (and, where this is done, encouraging cooperative group skills),
encouraging students to seek out appropriate resources independently, and
encouraging students to seek out and utilise working environments conducive to the task (for example, the "recital performance" based task involved moving outside and the analytic discussion based option involved moving to another room or an "independent learning centre".
